Born
November 27, 1923. Educated at Willowbank & Woodside schools
in Woodlands Road in Glasgow. Left school in 1942 & spent
two years with Clydesdale Supply Co. in Glasgow repairing radio
sets. Spent 1943 to 1946 in Fleet Air Arm. Served on HMS Vengeance
(Light fleet carrier) with British Fleet in India, Sri Lanka,
Australia and Japan. Demobbed as P.O. Radiomech in 1946, and applied
for amateur radio licence. Was exempt in both theory and morse
tests, and a 25w licence was issued on November 6, 1946. Started
work with Philips in Glasgow repairing radio sets. Progressed
to tape recorders, television etc. Married Margaret on Feb 2nd,
1951, and still married (to Margaret!) Started teaching RAE class
at Alan Glen's School in Glasgow in 1951, and did this for 27
years. Got a 250cc side valve Royal Enfield motor-bike (GLM134)
in 1952, and passed driving test first time. Progressed to car
in 1955. Transferred to Philips Scientific in 1960, working with
X-ray spectrometry, X-ray diffraction etc. Moved from Glasgow
to Stewarton in 1968, and retired in 1987 at age 63. Have been
member of Glasgow radio club since 1947. Still building valve
equipment, and still riding motor-bike in 2001! Main amateur radio
interests are construction, aerials, club activities, vintage
radio equipment and field days. Reckon I'm the only radio amateur
in S.W. Scotland without a computer! The future? Hope to still
be sending 'CQ' at the next sun-spot cycle max!!
